This artwork has been such a journey, with 2 unplanned drafts, it’s taken layer upon layer of feathers, textures, and patience, she finally revealed her presence on the page.

Known in many Indigenous Australian traditions as a messenger and guardian, the Black Cockatoo carries deep spiritual symbolism. It speaks of transformation, the power of listening to your inner voice, and embracing life’s cycles of change with grace and courage.

Flecked with starlike gold, this bird is often seen as a bridge between the earthly and the spiritual. It reminds us to slow down, to observe, and to honor the wisdom found in silence. For me, bringing this piece to life felt like an initiation, another reminder to trust the process, to create with reverence, and to allow the unexpected beauty to emerge.

May this painting bring a sense of grounding, wonder, and connection to spirit into the space it inhabits.
